Finding a taxi in the heavily pedestrianised Renaissance city of Florence is tough. Here is our guide to the best taxi apps in Florence.

The 3 Best Taxi Apps in Florence

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is a city like no other. Architectural marvels like the Duomo, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio are spread throughout the centre, enchanting visitors at every corner and making exploring Florence on foot one of the most rewarding experiences in Italy.

But Florence’s essentially medieval city plan, and the precedence given to pedestrians and cyclists over drivers, means that getting around Florence can be tricky, and ordering a taxi a logistical nightmare.

People in need of a taxi often find themselves frustrated by Florence’s unique challenges, including the absence of everyday taxi apps like Uber and Bolt. This lack of options can leave visitors stranded and stressed, but several other taxi apps in Florence have emerged to improve the city’s transport experience.

Below, we’ll explore the best options to ensure smooth and reliable transport during your visit.

Top Taxi Apps in Florence

TaxiMove

TaxiMove is one of the most reliable taxi apps available in Florence. Designed for both Apple and Android users, the app simplifies the process of booking a taxi. Features include instant fare quotes, online payment options, and driver reviews.

Be aware that while most drivers prefer cash payments, they typically carry a payment terminal if you insist. (Indeed, by law, taxi drivers cannot confirm a trip unless they are able to accept card payments).

ITTaxi

ITTaxi offers an easy-to-use interface and works similarly to popular ride-hailing apps like FreeNow or Uber. This app is available on both iOS and Android platforms and uses GPS tracking to connect you with nearby drivers.

Once you’ve booked a ride, you can track your taxi’s progress on the map, much like Uber or Bolt. This app is ideal for travellers who appreciate straightforward functionality and the convenience of multiple payment options.

appTaxi

appTaxi is another convenient taxi app in Florence. It automatically detects your location via GPS, allowing you to book a taxi with just a few taps, and accepts multiple payment options, including credit cards, Satispay, and digital wallets.

You customise your ride preferences, such as requesting a station wagon or a pet-friendly vehicle, and you can also input the number of passengers or any luggage requirements you may have, making it a great choice for families and large groups.

Why can’t I just take an Uber?

Unfortunately, Uber does not operate in Florence. Because of government legislation introduced under pressure from Italy’s infamous taxi lobby, the only Italian cities serviced by Uber are Rome and Milan. Even here, the only available Uber services are Uber Black, Uber Lux or Uber Van, meaning you pay more than you would for typical white taxis.

Tips for Using Taxi Apps in Florence

  • Book your accommodation in the centre. Florence is an easily walkable city, covering just under 40 square miles (100 square kilometres). As everything worth seeing is concentrated inside the city centre, within its Renaissance walls, you should look for accommodation somewhere in the centre. The neighbourhoods of Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, and San Lorenzo are all good. Or if you want to venture further out, check out the Oltrarno or San Frediano districts across the River Arno.
  • Plan ahead. Florence’s taxis operate on a radio dispatch network, so you should try to book your ride in advance whenever possible. Also be aware that there will be less availability during peak times, especially early evening and late at night.

Be persistent with your payment methods: While apps like ITTaxi and appTaxi allow for digital payments, some drivers still prefer cash. Be prepared for either option, but if you’re paying by card be persistent in making them accept your payment. They are required by law to do so.
