How to Make the Perfect Aperol Spritz

How to Make the Perfect Aperol Spritz

Italy’s passion for Aperol Spritz has been bubbling away for decades. But its popularity has spilled over in recent years, turbo-charging this alcoholic tango into an international Italian icon. Glasses of the golden stuff are sipped and Snapchatted on the streets of major cities around the world—from Rome to Rio; Riga to… Riyadh?…

Probably not Riyadh. Let’s say Reykjavik.

Sipped on the streets of cities from Rome to Reyjavik.

Effective branding has gone a long way in establishing Aperol Spritz as a symbol of summer seduction and effervescent escapism. Search the hashtag #spritztime for the orangest Instagram feed you’ve ever seen, with almost 200,000 photos of people showing us what they’re about to put in their mouths.

You get why people do it though. Against your typical Italian backdrop - of ancient cities, golden sunsets, and poorly parked Fiat Pandas, the Aperol Spritz is cooler than the Colosseum, more aspirational than Armani—perhaps even more popular than Pavarotti (that’s not to take anything away from Nessun Dorma; it’s still a massive tune).

Making the perfect Aperol spritz is as easy as one, two, three. All it takes is one part soda water, two parts Aperol, and three parts prosecco. The Tipsy Tour Team has written this guide to making the perfect Aperol Spritz so you can recreate this Italian classic at home. Just follow these five simple steps and prepare to enter your very own Aperol paradise.

Ingredients:

  • Aperol (2 oz / 60 ml)
  • Prosecco (3 oz / 90 ml)
  • Soda water (1 oz 30 ml)
  • Ice
  • One orange slice

Method:

  1. Fill your glass with a generous scoop of ice.
  2. Pour in two parts Aperol.
  3. Pour in three parts prosecco.
  4. Add a dash of soda water.
  5. Gently stir, garnish with an orange slice and serve.

What’s the best prosecco for Aperol spritz?

We usually use Barone Montalto’s Première Cuvée Brut, a Sicilian sparkling chardonnay. Brut or extra dry is best, but you can get the same result with any sparkling wine or prosecco.
